Brother's Death
The narrator Tambudzai, or Tambu, opens the novel by stating flatly, “I was not sorry when my brother died.” She later brings us back to opening moment of the novel again in chapter 3, when Nhamo is late returning from school as expected. What, in your opinion, is the core reason she's not sorry about his death? Give two pieces of textual evidence (i.e. quotes) to support your idea. 1-2 paragraphs.
In the beginning when Tambu said "I am not sorry for my brother's death." I was shocked because I grew up with two brothers, and I can never imagine having that kind of cruelty and callousness towards them. As I read the book I understood why she was not sorry, but I did not accept it. In the book she pretty much says it took my brother's death for my family to send me back to school, and realize that we are somewhat equal. It is shocking, but I still believe that her going to school was a good thing. She goes on to say that she will not apologize for seeming so cruel, but will go on to recount the story as she remembers it.
