Introductions

Introduce yourself: What is your name, what middle school did you attend, why did you choose to read this text, and do you have any personal connections to the subject matter (e.g. Africa, England, boarding school)?  Do you tend to have a pessimistic (i.e. negative) or optimistic (i.e. positive) view of Western/American culture?

  1. My name is Bobby Stearns and I attended the Athenian middle school. I choose to read Nervous Conditions because i had never read a book on a subject like this and it sounded very interesting. Also, i have a connection to the subject matter because my aunt was born in Uganda and was in a family like Nyasha with wealthier parents. She then moved to India I believe for several different reasons. I generally have a optimistic view of American culture.

  4. My name is Nia Warren. I attended both Montera Middle School and The Athenian Middle School. I chose to read Nervous Conditions because of my experience with books like it and my personal connection to the plots summary. In elementary school I was very fascinated in reading books that had to do with African culture that had to do with African slavery in America. Though this book is not connected to slavery, I recognize the strong female lead with an African background. My reasons for choosing Nervous Conditions also had to do with my personal connection to the book. I too had to leave my comfort zone in a public school in Oakland, to go to a private school in Danville that I knew nothing about. Though going to this school was what I wanted, it was a challenge for me to assimlate myself with this whole new world. My story is similar to Tambu leaving her home, and comfort zone, to become a part of a whole new world just to benefit her education. I do have an optimistic view of American culture. America is described to be a place of opportunity for all.
